10 Crypto Security Habits That Kept Me Safe for 5 Years
After five years in crypto, I’ve seen friends lose fortunes. Here are 10 security practices that protected my assets—from wallet choice to daily habits.
1. Keep Large Amounts Off Hot Wallets
Hot wallets like MetaMask are only for small amounts. Large assets go to cold wallets (Ledger, Trezor, or paper).
2. Seed Phrase Never Online
Write seed phrases on paper, store in a safe. No photos, no cloud, no typing into any device.
3. Use a Dedicated Device
One clean phone or computer exclusively for crypto transactions, no extra apps or browsing.
4. Exchange Whitelist
Enable withdrawal address whitelist on exchanges. New addresses require 24‑hour hold, making it harder for hackers.
5. Revoke Contract Permissions
After using DeFi, revoke token allowances. Use revoke.cash regularly to check.
6. Avoid Public WiFi
Public WiFi can be compromised. Use cellular data or home network for any transaction.
7. Beware Fake Support
Any “support” reaching out on Telegram/Discord is a scam.
8. Update Devices
Keep OS and apps updated to patch known vulnerabilities.
9. Use 2FA, Not SMS
Authy or hardware keys for exchanges. Avoid SMS 2FA.
10. Diversify Storage
Split assets across multiple exchanges and wallets.
In crypto, security is worth more than any gain.
Test small transfers periodically to ensure addresses and wallets are working.
